Magazine covers

Magazine Tips- When I make my own news stand cover I am going to be looking to make something that creates curiosity, something thats easy to scan over and get information from, and something that makes the reader feel like they aren't wasting their time by reading it. I also want to create something that is emotionally irresistible to someone, and makes the reader want to spend their money on it. 1. Formal 2. Informal 3. Informal 4. Environmental 5. Formal/Environmental? 6. Informal 7. Formal 8. formal 9. formal 10. formal 12. formal 13. informal 14. formal 15. Environmental 16. Formal (the one with bill clinton)- formal Favorite   With this cover I feel like they could have made her face more recognizable, and a little bit less airbrushed, although this is a beautiful image I would have liked for it to have a more textured feel instead of her looking plastic. I cant really read the tiny little print to the side and I think this would have been a better c

The Hand of Mrs. Wilhelm Rotgen- W.C. Rotgen 1895  This is a photo of the first X-Ray. It caught my eye because it was a hand with no skin duhhhh. W.C. Rotgen invented the x-ray machine andsince then it has saved countless lives and made detecting injuries much easier. (Rotgen was not a photographer so theres no other people that he photographed)

Emmett Till- David Jackson 1955 What drew me to this photo was the emotions on the parents face, they seemed so empty and sad. Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy who talked to a white woman in a store. The husband of that white woman then went to Tills house, kidnapped him, then brutally beat him and tied barbed wire around his neck and attached a 75 pound fan to him and dumped him in a river. This photo became a civil rights movement that brought to life the horrors that racism and segregation had in this country. Emmett mom decided that her son would not die in vain and demanded that his funeral be an open casket, so that everyone could see the brutality a 14 year old boy faced.  David Jackson sr.- David Jackson 1956 (there are so many David Jacksons I couldn't find specific info on the one who took the photo)

The Pillow Fight- Harry Benson 1964 What drew me to this photo was the action taking place in it (I also noticed the Beatles :). Benson was supposed to be going to Africa to to cover a story there when he was assigned to take photos of The Beatles, he scoffed and said he didn't want to cover a rock and roll story, but he soon realized that this was where he was meant to be.  Diana Vreeland- Harry Benson Benson was born in 1929, in the UK. He attended school at Glasgow School of Art.

Dali Atomicus- Philippe Halsman 1948 What drew me to this photo was Salvador Dali, I recognized him and his mustache instantly. Salvador Dali is one of my favorite painters of all time (after Frida Kahlo, obviously). Halsman believed that to truly capture a persons portrait you had to capture themselves and an aspect of them. He and Dali worked often together with Dali doing more and more crazy ideas and pushing the limits of photography at the time. The photo took 26 tries, each time cleaning off the floor and drying the cats to get the next take.  Jumps- Philippe Halsman Philippe Halsman was born in 1906 in Latvia, and died in 1979. He went to school at  Technische Hochschule, but for electrical engineering.

The Face of AIDS by Therese Frare,  1990 I chose this photo because of the impact the AIDS epidemic had on the LGBT community, and I liked this photo also because of the raw emotions it lets you see. David Kirby is seen on the far left of the photo on his deathbed. He died at the age of 32 from AIDS. This picture was used in an advertisement from Benneton to raise awareness for AIDS. Benneton using the photo created a lot of controversy, people thought that they were capitalizing on the death of another person, and using this painful photo to make money. Therese Frare attended Ohio State University, and was born in 1973 in Seattle.

Fashion Photography and Ethics

The changes made to the models face - They made her neck longer - They moved up her eyes - They enlarged her eyes - They made her face thinner - They darkened the hair around her face - They added more contour to her face to make her look thinner - They thinned out her neck and made it slimmer Changes to the models body- - They changed her skin color - Elongated her neck and back - Slimmed her stomach, back, neck, legs, breasts, and booty. - They made her look taller - They made her skin more even-toned on her face - Edited the highlights in her hair - Made her more curvy - Lifted her eyes - Enlarged her eyes - Changed her irises Changes they made to the 3rd model- -oh wait its a pizza.    I think that it is acceptable to add makeup to the models before the photo takes place, and very lightly go in to correct blemishes or red spots, other than that I think that this should not be happening. This shouldn't be happening because if you wanted a model that look

Portrait Ideas

                                               1. Movement Portraits can be so static – but what if you added some movement into them? This can be achieved in a few ways: Photo by  Michael Sarver 2. Framing your subject Framing is a technique where by you draw attention to one element of an image by framing it with another element of the image. Image by  darkmatter Environmental Portraits-   I liked these photos because I feel like i was getting an insight of their lives. Photography self portraits-  I really liked how in the first photo it is more staged and planned, and in the second photo (my queen Lisette Model) she is more raw and it is a spur of the moment deal. Causal Portraits- I like how with causal portraits you get candid photos that can show a real emotion at the time it was taken.     Over Thanksgiving break I am going back to Houston to see my family and my friends there. I plan on taking photos of my friend Tristan, h
